The Children of AP need your help in eradicating Polio

If you were raised in Andhra Pradesh you were surrounded by the devastating effects of polio, a crippling and sometimes fatal disease, on your family members and friends, and you were always aware of the death and disfigurement associated with such an insidious disease.

Even when visiting Andhra Pradesh one can still see the long range effects that Polio has had among our people and communities.

Today, one does not see the same crippling effects of polio among our young children due to the tremendous efforts of Rotary International and Rotary clubs throughout the world to eradicate polio.

Each year India holds two National Immunization Day (NID), throughout the country including AP.  Each child from newborn through 5 years of age will be immunized during the NID.  Each child must receive multiple doses of polio vaccine to be fully protected, this could take up to 10-12 doses per child. 

There are over 170,000,000 children in India who must be vaccinated twice each year, this means that 340,000,000 doses of vaccine must be administered.

Within the next few years, with successful vaccination campaigns in AP and all of India, polio, will no longer be a threat.  If we fail to eradicate polio, it will come back as strong as before and continue to devastate children and families.  It is imperative for the future of the children of AP and India that polio be eradicated.

This is where we need your support. Polio cannot be eradicated without getting vaccine to the children.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded the Rotary Foundation (TRF) a US$355 million in matching funds if The Rotary Foundation raised US$200 million.  The Rotary Foundation and Rotary clubs throughout the world have pledge to raise US$200 million to meet this challenge.

Rotary International, a worldwide service organization, has made the eradication of polio its number one priority and has raised more than one billion dollars towards that effort.

As an Indian and as a member of NATS we ask that you make a generous donation to help Rotary eradicate Polio in AP and throughout India.

For each dollar we as NATS members donate to Rotary to eradicate polio, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match our contribution dollar for dollar.

NATS has pledged to assist Rotary in achieving its match by pledging to raise 5 Million Dollars towards the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation match to eradication Polio.
